What exactly is Clay Target Shooting?
Clay Target Shooting is the sport of shooting at special flying targets, known as clays, with a shotgun. The sport is currently enjoyed by thousands of people, aged from 9 to 90 of either sex, across the UK and the world. The CPSA is the body that regulates the standards of safety and competition at 450 affiliated and registered grounds around the country, including Newnham Park, and provides more information on their website at www.cpsa.co.uk

Do you have to be a club member to shoot at Newnham Park SG?
No, our Shooting Ground is open to both club members and non-members. The membership club offers financial benefits to regular visitors, so if you shoot here more than once a month, you may want to consider joining the club.

Is there an age limit to participate in clay target shooting?
There is no age limit to shoot, as long as those under 18 are accompanied. We would advise that children over the age of 8 may shoot, depending on size, although Newnham Park SG may intervene at their discretion if safety is felt to be compromised.

Do I have to have a shotgun certificate?
No, newcomers may hire shotguns under supervision at Newnham Park Shooting Ground, without the need for a licence, under Section 11(6) of the Firearms Act 1968. This allows novices to fully participate before investing in guns and security. If you wish to own or possess your own shotgun, a Shotgun Certificate is required, which can be obtained from the Firearms Department of your local Police Force and will require an inspection of storage security.

Can a group of friends shoot together?
Clay Target Shooting is a very sociable sport and Newnham Park welcomes groups of friends or colleagues. We specialise in putting on Corporate events and Stag/Hen parties for groups – more information can be found on the Corporate/Groups page of this website. If you wish to simply practice, and all the members of your party have a Shotgun Certificate, then Wednesdays and Saturdays are the best days to visit when you may shoot your chosen discipline at your leisure. When sharing a shotgun, the law requires that at least one person in a group of four must hold a shotgun certificate.

Is there parking at Newnham Park SG?
There is plenty of car parking adjacent to the clubhouse.

When can I shoot at Newnham Park SG?
Open practice is on Wednesdays and Saturdays and opening times are 10am – 5pm (extended until 8pm on Wednesdays during summer). Other days can be arranged at the management’s discretion, please call to discuss. Most Sundays Newnham Park SG hosts CPSA registered competitions, on which days practice can often be available in other disciplines – check the Events page for details.

How much does it cost to shoot?
A round of 25 clays (Sporting and Trap) costs £6.50 for non-members and only £5.50 for members. Cartridges are available, from £5.00 per box of 25, from the clubhouse.

Can I pay by credit card?
Yes, all types of payment card are accepted at Newnham Park SG.

Which disciplines can I shoot at Newnham Park SG?
The following clay shooting disciplines are available at Newnham Park SG: Sporting; FITASC; Sportrap; Down The Line (DTL); Automatic Ball Trap (ABT); Universal Trench (UT); Skeet; Olympic Skeet (OS); Double Rise; Double Trap. This is every clay shooting discipline, except Olympic Trench (OT).

Is shooting tuition only available for individuals?
No, tuition may be taken alone or with a friend or relative. To see results, we recommend that instructors are shared between as few people as possible and, for game tuition, we insist upon a limit of three people per instructor. Newnham Park SG does offer a more fun, but less intensive, format for shooting in a party of more than two – please visit our Groups/Corporate page for more information.

What is Newnham Park SG’s postcode, so that I may locate it in my satellite navigation system?
Our postcode is PL7 5BN. This should guide you to the estate entrance, from which point you should follow the Shooting Ground signage all the way into the car park. When travelling to Newnham Park from the East however, please be aware that you may need to disregard GPS advice when driving on the A38 – you should actually continue until the A38 has become a 3-lane carriageway, then turn off onto Deep Lane, from which point your system should resume the correct path. Alternatively, an extremely detailed and printer-friendly map is available to download from the Contact Us page.

I have been given a gift voucher. How do I redeem it?
If your gift voucher is for tuition, you will need to book in advance. Please inform the member of staff that you have a voucher when booking, and then simply present the voucher to the front desk upon arrival for your lesson. If you have a voucher for clays, no advance notice is required, simply present the voucher to the front desk upon arrival.

How should I dress to shoot at Newnham Park SG?
Please come prepared for the fickle nature of our English weather. We recommend sturdy footwear; trainers or walking/gardening shoes are fine.

Can I bring spectators and my dog?
Non-shooting spectators are welcome at Newnham Park SG, although they will need to wear ear protection. Dogs are only permitted in the Shooting Ground if kept on a lead at all times.

Do you have wheelchair access?
The clubhouse and most of the shooting stands are accessible to wheelchair users.
